Animals cannot tell you what is wrong, so you need to recognise the signs that tell you that your pet is in pain. If you know your pet, you will be aware that there is a problem because of the change in their behaviour, different pets will react in different ways.
Signs to look out for include:
Consider how an injury could have occurred, knowing what has happened can make it easier to identify the injury.
Take care when checking your pet, do a quick check touching them very gently, if you hurt them they may react and snap or bite, it is better to do with two people so that one can calm and control your pets head while you look for injuries or try to identify the source of the pain.
Contact your vet for advice and seek veterinary assistance if required. Where illness is causing pain, the pet should be seen by the vet in all cases.
